What Retinol Does and Why You NEED It!! | Dr Sam Bunting

What EXACTLY does retinol do? It is one of the most googled questions in skincare – and it’s a really important one to answer, particularly for those of you who might be new to my channel. Retinol is probably the ingredient that gets the most attention and interest in skincare, and with good reason. It does so much!

There’s a lot of fear and anxiety around starting retinol; but then there is also so much promise. Ultimately, it’s the golden ingredient that’s able to deliver everything from solving acne to improving the appearance of ageing skin.

In today’s video, I go deep on the science of retinoids and hopefully share some new insights to help you understand what they can do for you (answer: a lot!!) Knowledge is the way to conquer any anxiety you might have around starting the most meaningful skincare relationship you can have.

As always, thank you so much for watching and for all your support!

  1. I am 39 years old. When I was around 18 I used to wear makeup and tan pretty routinely (it was the early 2000’s, that’s what we did lol). My skin took it well and I never had issues with acne. I met my current boyfriend when I was 20 and I wore makeup for a couple years after that but stopped and haven’t regularly worn makeup since. I also do not have any regular routine to care for my face. I shower and that’s it. Sometimes I use BODY lotion on my face and nothing else. I have a 27 year old sister (12 years younger than I am) and she always tells me how soft and smooth my skin is compared to hers.

I was diagnosed with addison’s disease (primary adrenal failure) and I have some bad hyperpigmentation and melasma on my face. It is horrible and I can’t look in the mirror, hate being seen in public and talking to people and I especially refuse to be photographed!! Anyway, I seen two dermatologists and the options weren’t anything I was interested in. They told me I could possibly use a vitamin C serum with retinol. I have been using them for the passed few months and I honestly noticed a huge improvement, even with a somewhat flawless facial skin (other than melasma). I look forward to putting retinol on because it makes my skin feel even better! I just never knew exactly what it did or anything about it. Thank you!
